Family announces passing and asks for privacy

Her family confirmed she passed away Sunday at Alive Hospice in Nashville. They described her as a warm and gentle presence and asked for privacy while they mourn.

They also referenced the Grateful Dead circle and the band’s lyricist, invoking a farewell sentiment to honor her memory.

From Alabama roots to a session-singer career

Born Aug. 22, 1947, in Florence, Alabama, Donna Jean discovered music early. She first sang with the group Southern Comfort and quickly became sought after in studios.

  • Worked as a backing vocalist for major artists.
  • Contributed to chart-topping singles and hit records.
  • Built a reputation for soulful harmonies across genres.

Her studio credits include sessions with Percy Sledge and Elvis Presley. She sang on the No. 1 hits “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “Suspicious Minds,” among others.

Joining the Grateful Dead and touring life

In 1971 she became part of the Grateful Dead lineup alongside her husband, keyboardist Keith Godchaux. Their addition reshaped the band’s vocal and keyboard sound.

Donna Jean later recalled enjoying the camaraderie and stage life with the group. The experience brought creative highs and relentless touring schedules.

Leaving the band and what followed

After the birth of their son Zion in 1974, the couple continued with the Grateful Dead for several more years. By the late 1970s they decided to step away.

The couple then founded the Heart of Gold Band in 1980. That project was cut short by tragedy when Keith Godchaux was killed in a car crash that same year. He was 32.

New chapter: marriage and family

Donna Jean remarried in 1981 to David MacKay. She later balanced family life with renewed musical projects and remained active in the music community.
